Located downtown Ottawa, Liu Chooti Law & Counselling Group is a multidisciplinary firm offering legal and counselling services both independently and in tandem based on client needs.
Our legal practice focuses on family law, landlord and tenant matters, civil litigation, immigration law, employment and labour law, and human rights, with plans to expand into real estate and other areas. Our counselling services, led by a registered social worker, provide individual and family therapy as well as inclusion consulting and training.

About the Role
We are currently seeking a Registered Social Worker (RSW) to join our team as a contract counsellor. This is a flexible part-time position (with potential to grow into full-time), offering remote and/or hybrid options. The successful candidate will focus on individual, couples, and/or family therapy. We are particularly interested in practitioners who use a combination of evidence-based, affirming practise, and culturally responsive therapeutic modalities including but not limited to Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy and Strength-based approaches.
This position offers professional support and the opportunity to grow within a collaborative, values-driven practice. Compensation is set at CAD $30.00 per hour.
Key Responsibilities
Provide counselling services to individuals, couples, and/or families.
Deliver trauma-informed and culturally grounded care.
Maintain clear, timely and confidential clinical notes.
Collaborate as needed with the legal team on interdisciplinary care and referrals.
Support clients navigating such challenges including grief, trauma, gender-affirming care, multigenerational/intergenerational trauma, displacement, family conflict, and systemic oppression.
Qualifications & Skills
Registered (RSW) and in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service workers (OCSWSSW)
Master of Social Work (MSW) required; additional certification in therapeutic modalities considered an asset.
Minimum 2-3 years’ counselling experience preferred.
Professional liability insurance (covered by the firm after 9 month-probationary period).
Language: English required; French or additional languages a significant asset.
Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and reflective practice, with a strong interest in continuous learning and growth.
Strong documentation skills and experience using practice management software.
Lived experience and/or strong dedication to understanding equity-deserving communities.
High compliance and ethical standard understanding required
Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
Be available to provide evening and weekend hours as required (based on client demand).

Student-Proposed Internship (SPI)
Location: Hybrid (office located at 116 Albert St, Ottawa)

Hours: 115 hours (unpaid, for course credit)
About the Role
We are seeking a Common Law student from uOttawa to join our team as a legal intern for course credit through the Student-Proposed Internship (SPI) program. This position is ideal for a student interested in exploring a progressive, integrated model of legal and counselling services, and gaining meaningful exposure to a client-centered, social justice-focused practice.
This internship offers opportunities to develop practice-ready skills while engaging directly with substantive and procedural areas of Ontario law.
Key Responsibilities
Under the supervision of Michelle Liu, Managing Partner, the student intern will:
Conduct legal research and draft memoranda, client communications, and legal documents (e.g. affidavits, pleadings, motion materials).
Assist with intake, client interviews, and file review.
Prepare summaries of legal issues, legislation, and case law for use in active files and client communications.
Support legal education, policy, and/or equity-related projects as time and interest permit.
Observe and support virtual or in-person proceedings (e.g., court hearings, mediation).
Learn to use legal tools including CanLII, WestLaw, Legal Aid Online, and Cosmolex (practice management).
Participate in regular check-ins with the supervising lawyer to reflect on learning and skill development.
Qualifications & Skills
Enrolled in 2L or 3L of the JD program at uOttawa and eligible to complete a SPI.
Demonstrated interest in social justice, human rights, or family law.
Experience working with equity-deserving communities is a strong asset.
Strong legal research and writing skills.
Comfortable working independently and remotely.
Organized, proactive, and reflective in their learning.
Fluency in English required; additional languages are an asset.
